Which Trace Heating System?

Frost Protection >>

Our frost protection systems fall into two principal categories – self regulating cable and constant wattage systems.

Constant wattage cables are simple, strong and flexible, and can be cut to length on site without wastage. They are easy to install and terminate, but must be used with a thermostat.

Self regulating systems tend to be more advanced products and they cannot overheat, even when overlapped, so they may be used with or without a thermostat. Please note, however, that the use of a thermostat is normally recommended in order to maximise controllability. The majority of trace heating applications tend to utilise self regulating cables. Like constant wattage systems, they are easy to install and terminate, and can be cut to length on site. When working with plastic piping, self regulating systems must be used in order to prevent plasticiser migration and to ensure the longevity of the pipework.

Please refer to our Installation Guide for fitting instructions. Product details are provided in the following sections:

  • Constant Wattage
  • Self Regulating

Constant Wattage

Constant wattage frost protection systems are simple, affordable and durable, but must always be used in conjunction with a thermostat.

Constant wattage products comprise a wire element, which is connected between two insulated bus-bar conductors that run along the entire length of the cable. The element makes contact with the parallel resistance conductors at regular intervals, thereby creating a succession of heating circuits.

The principal products in our range are as follows:

Ecozone 15

Ecozone is a simple, cut-to-length product that provides effective frost protection for pipework. Manufactured in silicone rubber, it is rated at 15w/m and operates at 230V. Ecozone is highly flexible and is suitable for smaller geometry pipework than our Zoneheat range.

Zoneheat

Our Zoneheat range is available in a range of outputs including 10, 20 and 30w/m. Like our Ecozone systems, they can be cut to length and are produced in silicone rubber. Braided versions of Zoneheat 20 and Zoneheat 30 are available and they can be supplied with a chemical resistant FEP outer jacket on request. These jacketed products – Zoneplus20 and Zoneplus30 – meet the requirements of BS6351 grade 2.2.

Self Regulating

TRACEJ

TRACEJ is a self regulating heating cable manufactured to meet the quality standards of BS6351 Grade 2.2. Suitable for the great majority of commercial and industrial installations, it is safe for use on both metal and plastic pipes, and only a straight run of heating cable is needed along the pipe, so one metre of pipe requires just one metre of TRACEJ. It can be cut to length on site and individual circuits produced using connection and end seal termination kits.

It is available on the reel for on-site cutting, or made to order in factory terminated circuit lengths ready for immediate installation.

Features:

  • 230 volt
  • Earth protection
  • Aluminium screen layer
  • Protective outer jacket
  • Termination kit – TRACEKITJ.

Specification:

  • Thickness: 4.9mm
  • Width: 13mm
  • Max. Exposure Temperature: 85˚C intermittent; 65˚C continuous.

SafeTrace

SafeTrace is a simple ‘plug-and-go’ system that is suitable for use by DIY enthusiasts or trade contractors. It is supplied ready terminated with an in-line moulded thermostat, which switches on at +5˚C and off at +9˚C to ensure optimal energy efficiency. A spare end-seal is supplied to enable cables to be cut to length and re-sealed if necessary.

PipeTrace

PipeTrace is a pre-packed, ready terminated, self regulating heating unit, sold in standard lengths of 1, 2 and 3 metres. It is a safe and simple DIY solution that affords excellent frost protection for pipes around the home and other areas such as caravans, stables, sports pavilions, greenhouses, schools etc.

Process Temperature >>

In many industrial environments, it is important to maintain or improve the viscosity of materials such as fats and oils, in order to ensure that they flow efficiently and without placing undue strain upon pumps. This can be achieved by maintaining process temperatures through the use of trace heating products, and to this end, we offer a range of both constant wattage and self regulating systems.

Constant Wattage
Constant wattage systems are simple, durable and cost efficient, and will tolerate higher temperatures than self regulating products. However, they must always be used in conjunction with a thermostat, and they cannot be used with plastic pipework. They comprise a wire element, which is connected between two insulated bus-bar conductors that run along the entire length of the cable. The element makes contact with the parallel resistance conductors at regular intervals, thereby creating a succession of heating circuits.

Self Regulating - TRACEJ
TRACEJ is a self regulating heating cable manufactured to meet the quality standards of BS6351 Grade 2.2. Suitable for the great majority of industrial installations, it is safe for use on both metal and plastic pipes, and only a straight run of heating cable is needed along the pipe, so one metre of pipe requires just one metre of TRACEJ. It can be cut to length on site and individual circuits produced using connection and end seal termination kits.

It is available on the reel for on-site cutting, or made to order in factory terminated circuit lengths ready for immediate installation.

Hot Water Temperature Maintenance >>

The importance of safeguarding water supplies against the threat of Legionnaire¡¯s Disease is well recognised and hot water maintenance has become an important aspect of the trace heating industry. To provide effective protection against the development of the Legionella bacterium, hot water supplies must be maintained at a temperature above 43¢ªC.

Our self-regulating heating tapes are specifically engineered to afford this kind of protection. Our W55 product will ensure that supplies are maintained at a safe 55¢ªC when used on a single insulated pipe, and will also help to keep operating costs to a minimum. For applications which require periodic sterilisation as an added safety measure, we also offer the W65, which will enable the water temperature to be raised to 65¢ªC.

Please note that high temperature sterilisation can only be achieved using the W65 in conjunction with the DHB 330 temperature controller. (Please see our Controls section for details.)

Both the W55 and W65 can be cut to length on site and operate at 230V. They will withstand surface temperatures of 100¢ªC (continuous) and 120¢ªC (intermittent). The W55 can be supplied in lengths up to 120m and requires 20A protection, while the W65 is available in lengths up to 100m and requires 25A protection.

Controls >>

In tandem with our various trace heating products, we have developed a range of temperature controllers that are ideal for a broad spectrum of surface heating applications. The use of these controls helps to ensure that systems continue to operate efficiently and cost effectively.

With operational ranges of between -5¢ªC to 200¢ªC, both surface- and air-sensing thermostats are housed in robust, IP65 rated weatherproof enclosures and feature clear visual status displays.

Surface- or capillary-sensing thermostats are used primarily for controlling pipework and vessel surface temperatures, and are specifically recommended for use with plastic pipework or other temperature-sensitive materials.

Air thermostats provide the essential control for frost protection systems and can be used to activate multiple heating circuits. They can be mounted remotely and should normally be placed in the coldest location within the area to be controlled.
