Which Trace Heating System?

First Trace Heating Direct products are suitable for a wide variety of commercial, industrial and domestic applications. To ensure that you get the most from your installation, we have developed a range of different systems. The following guide explains which products are best suited to which applications.

Commercial & industrial applications

For the great majority of applications, the TRACEJ range provides an effective and affordable solution. All TRACEJ products are self regulating 230V cables featuring earth protection, an aluminium screen layer and a protective outer-jacket. Manufactured to meet the quality standards of BS6351 Grade 2.2, they are suitable for use on metal and plastic pipes and are designed specifically for frost protection and low temperature maintenance.

TRACEJ can be cut from the reel to order so there is no material wastage and no special tools are required for installation. It will not produce dangerous hot-spots even when cables are touching or overlapping, and the different products within the range can be used when straight-tracing pipes of between 15mm and 150mm in diameter. Larger diameters will require spiral winding in order to comply with the British Standard.

TRACE10J is rated 10w/m and is suitable for circuit lengths of up to 200m. It requires 16A protection, with circuit breaker type C.
TRACE20J is rated 20w/m and is suitable for circuit lengths of up to 115m. It requires 20A protection, with circuit breaker type C.
TRACE30J is rated 30w/m and is suitable for circuit lengths of up to 85m. It requires 20A protection, with circuit breaker type C.
ECOTRACE15J is rated 15 w/m and is designed for more complex ‘small geometry’ applications where the 10mm minimum bend radius of TRACE10J and TRACE20J would be unsuitable.

Domestic / DIY installation

SAFETRACE is our latest product which is specially designed for use on domestic applications as well as static caravans. They are available in various lengths and come with a seperate heat shrink end seal so that you can cut the trace heating tape at the end of your pipe and heat shrink on a new end.

Refrigeration industry

First Trace Heating Direct has developed the Flexitrace system specifically for use in the refrigeration industry, where it is used to prevent cold room doors from freezing up. We also produce cable and heater mats for various other specialist industrial applications. Please contact our technical support team for details.
